This Memorial Fund has been generously established by the Hickey Family to benefit the Ministries and Retreat House activities of Casa Alta Royal Lodge. John is pictured here at Casa Alta shortly after receiving Knighthood in 2003, through the Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael of the Wing of the Diocese of São Tomé e Príncipe, a Diocesan Association of the Faithful, canonically erected under the patronage of His Royal Highness the Duke of Braganza, who is Grand Master of this prestigious and oldest Royal Order of the Portuguese Royal House and whose Knights are admitted into the Diocesan Brotherhood.
For his tireless promulgation of the devotion of Portugal’s Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, John Hickey was admitted into the Royal Brotherhood by proposal of the Royal Chaplain and Diocesan Representative Father John Guilbert Mariani. On his numerous trips to Fatima with his wife, Dame Mary Hickey, also member of the Royal Brotherhood, John undertook the support in the foundation and restoration of Casa Alta as a Retreat House, where he and his family subsequently stayed, and for which he and Dame Mary are gratefully acknowledged as its Founders.
Through their loyal support, many pilgrims to the Fatima Shrine are housed in the beauty and tranquillity of its privileged site on the ramparts of the nearby Castle of Ourém, under the direction and spiritual care of American priest of the Missionary Diocese of São Tomé e Príncipe, Father Mariani. Even a miracle took place here, which was recognized by the Vatican, to raise to the altars Saint Nuno Àlvares Pereira, the Holy Constable, Portugal’s latest canonized saint, the Founder of the Portuguese Royal House and of the Carmelite Third Order.
The Hickey Family continues, today, in the spirit of John’s devotion to Fatima, to support the ministry and programs at Casa Alta by establishing this Memorial Fund.
